YESTERDAY CAMBRIDGE DEFEATED OXFORD IN THE ANNUAL ROWING EVENT THE CAMBRIDGE TEAM, WINNER BY FOUR AND A HALF LENGTHS. THE OXFORD TEAM For the eighty-ninth time, the inter-university rowing match was run yesterday on the Thames, from Putney Bridge to Mortlake Bridge, over a 7 kilometer course. Oxford appeared to have the advantage at the start of the race, but within the first kilometer Cambridge took the lead and held it all the way to the finishing pontoon. Since the match was played in 1876, Oxford has recorded forty victories and Cambridge with thirty-five. Only once, in 1877, did the race end in a dead heat. The time achieved this year by the Cambridge “eight” was 18 minutes 41 seconds. The Oxford team started as favorites and there was great amazement to see the opposing team clearly beating the team that we thought, this year, was unbeatable. |
