scandale Riviera : the Germany at Monte-Carlo

A SCANDAL ON THE RIVIERA

The “Reliance”, a German liner flying the flag of the Republic of Panama, landed in Monaco General von Klük and Prince Eitel Frederick of Prussia, who were officially received at the Casino and the Palace. This time, people believe on the Riviera that Prince Louis went a little hard, a little too hard.

Since the great changes that took place last year, we have noticed that the principality is getting into trouble.

At first it was only a careful infiltration. Then, when it was seen that France tolerated this defilement, the horde lost all restraint. It was the invasion in broad daylight. It's now the official invasion.

I say official. Because, in the company of General von Klük, this bandit of the Great War, Prince Eitel Frederick of Prussia was officially received, not only at the Casino, but at the Palace.

The French colony of Monaco, however patient and resigned to many affronts, since the famous armistice banquet, where it was told that if it drank, others would pay for the champagne, has winced furiously under the outrage.

The scandal is great throughout the Riviera.

The Monegasques themselves feel bitter about it. And as this comes on top of the threats of a general strike, energetically formulated and violently repeated by Casino employees, dissatisfied with the salaries, this could end, and soon, in bad ways.

When the first time, when Prince Albert reigned, the Monegasques started a revolution against the palace, they only gave in when the French intervened to restore order. They wonder if it could be the same, today when the storm is brewing because they do not want to suffer the German shame that is imposed on them. And many French people ask themselves this.

But here are the facts:

The Reliance liner is German. It belongs to the Hamburg-America Line. Its crew is made up of sailors and officers from the German navy. He went on a tourist cruise in which four hundred German passengers took part, a large number of whom were cadets and officers of the German navy. The future crews of German submersibles need to see or better see the Mediterranean shores.

To sail in French waters, as close as possible to the coast, and to anchor in the harbor of Monaco, the Reliance flew the flag of the Republic of Panama. He disembarked his four hundred passengers in Monaco.

Among these passengers were General von Klück and Prince Eitel Frederick of Prussia. They were officially received at the Casino by Mr. René Léon, managing director, and taken by him to the Palace, where they were received, with all the honor that is customary among great people of the earth.

Then, the day spent pleasantly in the principality by the 400 Boche and their prince, the Reliance weighed anchor bound for Ajaccio, having taken on as new passengers a Boche diplomat and his secretary.

Let us leave aside this detail that the Monegasque authority did not respect the maritime requirements that the treaties with France impose on the principality. It's secondary. Only one fact matters. It is the official reception of Prince Eitel Frederick of Prussia at the Casino and the Palace. It officially marks German influence in the principality.

And this, as is customary to say, speaks for itself.
