 Unwanted Protesters

FOR MAY 1st

Unwanted protesters
Mr. Roéland asks the communists not to damage his neighborhood anymore.

Mr. Roéland, municipal councilor of the Saint-Louis hospital district, has just written to the general secretary of the C.G.T. to ask him to invite his comrades to take the May 1 demonstrations to another place in Paris.

Mr. Roéland believes that one gaslight is as good as another and he does not understand this protectionism enjoyed by storefronts in neighborhoods other than his own. We must hope that the C.G.T. will grant its claim and that, like the Olympic Games, the communist games will be held each year in a different place.

Yes, but which district could we choose this year? What a place above all, because the demonstrators need space and a place..

Place de la République? No, that would displease three city councilors instead of a Mr. Roéland (already appointed) for the 10th arrondissement, Mr. René Fiquet for the 11th and Mr. Georges Fiant for the 3rd.

Bastille Square? Alas! the three councilors become four: Mr. Florent Mater (4), Mr. Le Trocquer (12), Mr. Camille Renault (11) and Mr. André Puech (3).

Place Clichy? There are still three of them: Mr. César Caire (8), Mr. Godin (9) and Mr. Joseph Denais (17).

Place de l’Etoile? Le Poilu Inconnu has enough visits without that and that would upset Mr. Jousselin (17), Mr. Michel Missoffe (8) and Mr. Ernest Gay (16).

SO ? Boulogne wood ? We're meeting too many English people there this year and they wouldn't be interested. There would indeed be another way: the suppression, as in Italy, of the May 1 workers' holiday.

And another even more effective: modifying the calendar. The date May 1 would disappear. After April 30, we would immediately move to May 2 and the old May 2 would become May 2.

I submit this last idea to Mr. Roéland for what it is worth.

JEAN KOLB.
