An ugly stamp and a meaningless formula These are the P. T. T. stickers for the Olympic Games
After the Pasteur stamp, the P. T. 1. administration awarded us the Olympic Games stamp.
The first was ugly, a dull and poor ugliness. The second is even uglier. It is poorly designed, it is heavy, vulgar, sickeningly banal and, what's more, it is the most poorly engraved of all the stamps currently in service in all nations. Compared to this one, even those of the Russian Bolshevia are masterpieces.
Worse still, the new stamp bears, instead of the logical, expressive mention of "Olympic Games, 1924", the absurd formula, devoid of any meaning: "8 Olympiad".
Everyone now knows that the expression the Olympiads designated, in Greece, the period of years between two series of Games and not these Games themselves.
Thus these pitiful-looking stamps are at the same time burdened with a French error.
They will travel. They will carry throughout the universe indisputable proof that France, country of beautiful forms and luxury works, is no longer capable of giving these graceful messengers a French air. Will we only think that? We will go to these crude vignettes, his so firm in drawing, so original in invention, so delicate in execution.
We are not expressing our only opinion here: the most important art and decorative arts groups, the delegates of the industrial union chambers relating to the fine arts met and, under the presidency of Mr. François Carnot , have already protested against the Pasteur stamp.
For any new stamps, we had to consult the Beaux-Arts. Why don't we do it?
We were unable to obtain a precise answer from the P.T.T. management to whom we wanted to submit this question. We promise to insist and find out who is inflicting such lamentable figures on France.
