The "old Carthusians" of London

The "Old Carthusians of London" on the Côte-d'Azur

Like last year, the Festival Committee and the Cannes Sports Association invited an English school football team to come and play here at Easter.

Last season the Oxford University Club visited us, and this season it was the turn of the Old Carthusians, from Chaterhouse school. But while the "Oxonians" played only in Cannes, the "Carthusians pushed on to Menton, where the Olympique of this city received them, it must be said celebrated them, because it had given them a triumphant reception.

The match was played in the afternoon on the magnificent Cap-Martin field, in the presence of many notables, among whom we noticed: HRH the Duke of Connaught, who took a keen interest in the match; Mr. Churchman, Consul of England; the Countess of Bourbon, the Count and Countess of Bourbel, General Sir Archibald Harris, Colonel Brunet,

The fanfare of the 25th B. C. A. and the Lyre Roquebrunoise lent their support. The game gave rise to a very nice fight, from which the Carthusians emerged. winners by three goals to two.

In Cannes, visitors were less happy; undoubtedly a little tired by the journey, the receptions, and unaccustomed to the field, they allowed themselves to be defeated by four goals to zero, not without having put up a very honorable resistance to the formidable Cannes team which is among the best in France,

An elegant audience followed the match; at the tribune of honor were notably Her Majesty the Queen of Romania, LL. AA. II. the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess Cyrille of Russia; MM. Arago, deputy for Alpes-Maritimes, vice-president of the Chamber; Baréty and Grinda, deputies of Alpes-Maritimes; Lord Arthur Balfour, Duke of Manchester, Doctor J. Gazagnaire, Deputy Mayor; Sir Alan and Lady Johnston, etc., etc.
