Phases of Life

The human being is born, lives and dies. Childhood, adolescence, youth, virility, old age constitute. the main stages of this development, the continuity of which is constant. These various stages follow one another and are linked together, to form a progressive, harmonious and living whole.

The line of life originates between the top of the root of the thumb and the index finger, circulates like a river around the mount of Venus, which it encircles more or less, depending on its length.

Let us therefore divide human life and consequently the line of life into 14 stages or septenaries representing 98 years, from the cradle to longevity and let us leaf through together what Lamartine called the Book of Life:

The book of life is the supreme book, which cannot be closed or reopened at will.

1°Childhood goes from the cradle to the age of 7, the shape of the hands already indicates instincts, temperament, character.

2°Adolescence from 7 to 14 years old, the child already announces what he will be; it is the age of hopes. The hand informs us about the tastes and aptitudes of our children, it is up to us to consult it and according to their intellectual dispositions and their natural aptitudes. We will certainly be able to direct them in one of the branches of study, in relation to their means.

3°Puberty from 14 to 21 years old is the age of illusions, hope and all desires.

4°Youth from 21 to 28 years old is the age of sensual pleasures, of inconstancy, of enthusiasm.

5°The virile age of 28 to 35 is the time of physical and moral enjoyments; this is generally the most popular time.

6°The average age of 35 to 42 is the age of desire for fortune, ambition, glory.

7°Mature age from 42 to 49 years old is the culmination of human life: wisdom, reason, but desire to possess.

8°The Age of reflections from 49 to 56 years old, foresight and prudence characterize this phase of existence.

9°The Autumn of life from 56 to 63 years old is still the age of reflections and also of regrets.

10° The First Old Age from 63 to 70 years old, this phase is accentuated by infirmities, regrets and sorrows.

11° The Second Old Age from 70 to 77 years old, the man is then an old man, his character becomes difficult, he forgets that he was young.

12° and 13° Caducity from 77 to 91 years old, this period is the age of distrust and for many individuals, of boasting.

4° Finally, Longevity from 91 to 98 years old is the age of indifference, the two poles of life, childhood and obsolescence touch and merge...

It is through the life line that we know the degree of vigor of a person's physical constitution, the greater or less probability that their life will be long or short and the more or less serious accidents and illnesses which could put his life in danger.
