CHERBOURG Cost savings. The municipality of Cherbourg had granted the director of the theater of this city exemption from lighting costs for the next winter season. This reduction, in addition to the 30,000 francs in subsidy annually granted to the director, resulted in an expense of 8,000 francs for the city. Someone was surprised at this measure: rest assured, it was not a spectator, but the prefect of La Manche, Mr. Blet, who lives in Saint-Lô. Mr. Blet returned his specifications to the mayor of Cherbourg, Mr. Mahieu, asking him to examine whether, in order to save money, it would not be appropriate to have the costs of lighting the theater borne not by the taxpayers, but to users, that is to say to spectators. The Cherbourg city council is currently examining the suggestion of this senior official. -A. M |
