Russia The case of the Kief scholars We published in our Last Hour yesterday the text of the telegram that Mr. Poincaré sent to Mr. Tchitcherine to ask for the pardon of the Russian scientists condemned to death. Let us recall that they were beaten under the pretext that they had attempted to organize a counter-revolutionary movement for the benefit of Poland. On this subject we telegraphed from Moscow to the Reuters agency: Word is sent from Kief that MM. Chebakof, Yakovlef, Inovsky and Mrs. Vinogradova were sentenced to death. MM. Onichenko, Nicholas and his brother, Konstantin Vasilenko, Tcholgonsky, Smirnov and Telpygo were sentenced to ten years in prison. The court further sentenced Ms. Anna Kapoustinskia to seven years in prison and the other defendants to five years, except Mr. Yaklovsky who was acquitted. Those convicted can appeal within forty-eight hours. The command of the Red Army According to a telegram from Riga, the purge of the high command of the Red Army was completed under the leadership of Mr. Frunze, chairman of the Supreme Defense Council. It therefore seems that Mr. Trotzky, restored, would take over the war commissariat with a completely new staff but hostile to his policies. |
