FROM ONE DAY TO ANOTHERMillet's worksMiss Cadroy had the happy idea of offering the Cherbourg Museum a new painting by our illustrious compatriot the painter Jean-François Millet and the Municipal Council will have this evening to accept this donation which will enrich the already numerous collection of works by the painter of the Angelus which became the property of our city.In truth, if Cherbourg has several paintings and drawings by the Master, it is not very long ago; it is only since he came into enjoyment of the legacy made to the City by Mr. Ono known as Bio, former Marine doctor, who died in Saint-Malo, nephew by marriage of the great artist. This legacy now installed in the museum includes in particular a portrait of the grandmother of Millet's first wife. A portrait of Millet's young brother-in-law, a portrait of his first wife, a study for a painting representing the stoning of Saint Stephen. A portrait of Ms. Paule Ono. A portrait of Millet by himself. A portrait of Miss Pauline Ono, that is to say of Madame Millet before her marriage. A portrait of the artist's mother-in-law. A portrait of his father-in-law. Various paintings or studies. Childbirth, A shepherd playing the flute while his bride fishes. A drawing on gray paper of the drunk man; a spinning shepherdess; a draft on gray paper of the same subject. The storyteller; the Rock of Gargantua, etc... All these works are above all works of youth which would add little to the glory of the author of the Angelus and the Gleaners; they nonetheless deserve to be preserved devoutly at the Cherbourg Museum which is in a way the museum of his native country, since Millet was born in Gréville, just a few kilometers from the town of which he considered himself the child... Regarding this Ono said Bio legacy, Mr. Mayor will allow us to ask him at what time he intends to demonstrate his respect for the last wishes of the donor by having each painting by Millet placed on it. a cartridge recalling the origin of the legacy and the provenance of the works of the illustrious painter... A little recognition is not a good thing for a legatee like the city of Cherbourg. E.C. |
