The great American artist, Mrs. Mary Garden, has a special predilection for the Côte-d'Azur. Grateful for all that Mrs. Mary Garden has done for Peille, the municipality of this village has named the artist from overseas an "honorary citizen". The illustrious singer, in return for good deeds, has shown even more sympathy for Peille who, finally, wanted a location in her territory to bear the name of Mary Garden. Last Sunday, the laying of the first stone of the square that will bear the name of "Mary-Garden" took place in Peille, on the occasion of the Feast of Baguettes, in memory of the great artist, patron of the village. Around 3 p.m., artillery salvos announced the arrival of the great American benefactress, whose generosity for this locality is boundless. Immediately the famous singer is welcomed to the strains of the Marseillaise"; the flags of the commune of Peille, the Comité des Fêtes and the "Beau-Soleil-Oies" are bent. The procession forms and goes to the site of the future square that the crowd has filled. Miss Garden takes her place on the official platform. The delegations of the Municipality of La Turbie, the "Amicale Sportive de La Turbie", the Société de secours mutuels de Peille, the Cercle Républicain, the Syndicat d'Initiative gather on the sides of the square. In the front rows of the authorities: Mr. Barelli, district councilor; Doctor Mazières; Messrs. Verani, office manager at the Prefecture of Nice; Ferran, teacher in Peille; Marcel Montagne; Laugier, entrepreneur; Félix Laurenti, etc., etc. In the midst of general silence, Mr. Montagne advances in front of Miss Garden and delivers a speech that we regret not being able to publish. In the most choice terms, the Mayor thanks, on behalf of the Municipality of Peille and all the inhabitants, the generous benefactress who has just endowed the village with a square that will be the adornment of the locality and which will forever perpetuate the memory of this woman with a big heart who is surrounded by all the respectful sympathy of the inhabitants of Peille. Mr. Montagne's speech is warmly applauded. Miss Mary Garden, whose emotion can be guessed, then comes down from the platform; the minutes of the ceremony are sealed in stone by Miss Mary Garden who handles the trowel very elegantly. Amidst the applause of the crowd, the ceremony ends. In the middle of a double hedge of admirers, the great American benefactress then goes to the "Baguettes" festival, which is in full swing. Miss Garden is delighted to see all these young people who are having a great time and never ceases to express her satisfaction to those around her. |
