THE CIVIL WAR IN CHINA

Will the United States Intervene?

London, September 24. According to a message from San Francisco, the United States government has ordered four naval officers and four gunnery sergeants stationed at Mare Island (a U.S. naval base on the coast of California) to proceed immediately to San Diego.
In naval officer circles, this is seen as confirmation of rumors circulating that the United States is preparing to send an expeditionary force to China. The same message adds that the transport Argonne, stationed at Mare Island, has received orders from Washington to be ready for any eventuality.

On the other hand, a dispatch from Shanghai to the Reuter agency announces that all the great powers have decided not to intervene in China.

An Interview with Dr. Nansen
Geneva, September 24th (by our special correspondent).- Interviewed on the subject of the German Cabinet's response to the overtures made concerning admission to the League of Nations, Dr. Nansen replied:
One thing is clear: the Reich Government proclaims its desire to join the League of Nations. Another is no less clear: its admission cannot take place during the present assembly. The candidacy is virtually submitted. Why should it not be submitted in due and proper form?
Is the question of responsibility for the war hidden behind the circumlocutions of the communiqué?
Not at all, said Dr. Nansen, there is no question of it and there will be no question of it.

THE WAR IN MOROCCO

The Spaniards continue their offensive
Madrid, September 24. An official telegram from Morocco informs us that, in the western zone, the columns of General Castro and General Serrano, after fierce fighting, have advanced in the sector of Zocoarbaa and attacked the position of Xerutra.

The operation begun yesterday in Morocco continues this morning, encountering little resistance from the enemy, who is quite weakened. The operation has, however, continued slowly because of the difficulties of the terrain.

Abd-el-Krim would buy submarines and aeroplanes London, September 24. The Star is publishing today a long dispatch from its correspondent in Paris, a dispatch for which he should be given full responsibility.
The correspondent of this newspaper claims to have learned from a completely authoritative source that Abd-el-Krim, with the help of a Franco-English syndicate (?), is trying to buy two old English submarines. The Riffian chief is said to intend with these two submarines to cut off the Spanish forces in Morocco from their supply bases.
The negotiations between the Franco-English syndicate and Abd el Krim are not limited to the purchase of submarines. Abd el Krim is said to have managed to obtain aeroplanes with their personnel, munitions and machine guns.
