Z Paris soir 1924 11 11 The game of dominoes

Peaceful citizens who, in the evening, at the hour of the aperitif, will play the drinks on a throw of dominoes, have you ever thought that you owe the joys of this innocent pastime to venerable monks. ?

The game of dominoes was invented at Monte Cassino, by two monks. Seeking one day to distract themselves, without breaking the rule of silence imposed on them, they imagined playing with small square stones, marked with different points that they combined according to an agreed order.
The winner would warn his partner by muttering, in a low voice, the first verse of Vespers, which begins thus: Dixit dominus domino meo"...
It soon became "fashionable" in the convent of Monte Cassino to spend recreations indulging in the little game of square stones and permission was soon given to the monks to amuse themselves with it: the discovery crossed the walls of the convent and spread around, winning like an epidemic.
The new followers, unfamiliar with Latin, simplified the liturgical formula and kept only the word "domino" which, in the long run, ended up giving its name to the game.
