The unexpected deputy A very proper and self-confident gentleman appeared yesterday at the Palais-Bourbon, at the opening of the session.
— I am Mr. Edgard Maurice, the new deputy from Guadeloupe, he said to the ushers. His nonchalance impressed. They let him in. He thus arrived at the session room, where he went to sit on the left, next to Mr. Ossola. — I am your new colleague, he said to the deputy from Alpes-Maritimes. — Delighted to make your acquaintance, the latter replied.
However, the ushers had consulted their little notebook and the two deputies from Guadeloupe, Messrs. Gratien Candace and Jean François: — A third deputy among us, said Mr. Candace, astonished... We don't know! He must be a "joker". Also, while the pseudo-deputy Edgard Maurice was engaging in conversation with Mr. Ossola, a bailiff came to ask him to leave. Which he did, moreover, without protesting. He is, they say, an unbalanced person. |
