The Trailing Arts
We are written:
The new regulations that have made it mandatory for trailing nets to have a mesh of at least one centimeter, at the part of the pocket, seem to have to protect small fish from their total destruction. It has been recognized that since fishing using tartanons, issaugues, bragins, etc. has increased on the coast, and in all seasons, real ravages have been wrought. Last summer, we were able to see on several occasions quantities of small horned fish, which had only hatched a few weeks ago, destroyed uselessly, one might say, by these devices. The repercussions of this ravage, which also applied to bouillabaisse fish, are being felt by line fishermen. The seabed has suffered from this continuous scraping where the algae, little by little, disappear. Will the measure taken for the preservation of small fish be effective? We hope so if serious control is exercised. It is in the interest of fishermen whose work will become unproductive. The best protection against the use of dragging arts would be for professionals, out of foresight, to decide to no longer use them.
