Who will be President of the Republic?

No doubt Mrs. Combe, Mr. Doumergue's niece

With the exception of one, the Presidents of the Third Republic were never, until the last Congress, chosen from among single people.

The Constitution does not exclude, of course, from the highest judiciary of the State, those whom the chances of life have not led to marry in marriage, but the requirements of the Protocol have always encouraged the members of the National Assembly to place their preferences on a head of state capable of being usefully assisted, by his wife, in the hectic cycle of official receptions.

And yet, Mr. Doumergue is not married!

The protocol of foreign courts cannot provide any indication because when a sovereign is a widower, it is up to a crown princess or failing that to a princess of royal blood who has the sometimes heavy and always delicate task of welcoming guests and preside over Court celebrations.

In the Republic, no precise rule dictates to the President his conduct in such matters.
case. However, we learn from an unofficial source that at the Elysée, Mr. Gaston Doumergue intends to call on the kind assistance of his niece, Madame Combe, who would soon come to adorn the Elysée Palace with her smiling grace and radiant beauty.

To all the charming gifts with which a generous nature has already filled her. Ms. Combe combines a musical virtuosity of the rarest and most attractive.

Let us wish the Elysée and we wish... a President. of the Republic also full of charm and talent.

ROBERT BOUCARD.
