HOLY GODMOTHER OF AMERICA We know that the city of Saint-Dié is the godmother of America; it was in fact in Saint-Dié that, on August 25, 1507, the printers of the Vosges Gymnasium gave America, for the first time, the name, which was to remain for it, of “America”, in their Cosmographicae Introductio . During their trip to France in 1921, members of the American Legion insisted, on August 18, on going to Saint-Dié on a patriotic pilgrimage, and giving to the city, while awaiting the execution of a work of art, in memory of this sponsorship, a model, which was temporarily installed. On Sunday, the work of art itself, which consists of a marble plaque, was affixed, during an intimate ceremony, to the house currently occupied by a pharmacist, and in which the famous historical book. This brochure bears the following mention: “This house symbolizes the baptismal font of America, where the workers of the Vosges Gymnasium composed the Cosmographicae introductio, and where the name America was given to the new western continent,” |
