TO THE COMMONS FREEDOM OF OPINION During the debate on the Labor Budget, an MP called for an investigation into whether the latest strike on the London Metropolitan Railway was not due to communist maneuvers. Shaw, the labor minister, responded that he would not investigate because the cause of the strike was obvious to everyone. He added : In England, no one is made a crime for the opinions he expresses. If a man is stupid enough to be a communist, it is no more stupid for him than for a conservative to be a conservative. The government will never do anything to stifle the aspirations of opinions, but it will not fail to prevent violence which could result from the expression of opinions. » CONSERVATIVE MOTION POSTPONED London, June 27. - The House rejected by 245 votes to 166 a conservative motion tending to reduce the emoluments of the Minister of Labor, a motion which amounted to a vote of censure and which, if it had been voted on, would have resulted in the resignation of the Minister of Labor. Mr. Masterman, a Liberal, urged his Liberal Party colleagues to vote against the motion. |
