The drunk and the policeman

The Drunkard and the Policeman

I recently saw an unfortunate policeman who had all the trouble in the world dragging a scandalous drunkard to the police station. The man who had been drinking was not bad, but he could not stand up, so the policeman performed in the middle of the street that irresistible music-hall number which consists, for a clown, of carrying on his shoulders another clown as limp as a rag. All the onlookers gathered on the sidewalk giggled at the sight of the impotent efforts of the policeman.
Finally, the Spirit visited him.
He hailed a taxi, commandeered the driver; they took the drunken citizen by the head and feet and installed him on the cushions.
"Where do you live?" asked the driver.
"Rue de... rue de... la Mare... forty-one..."
"The annoying thing would be that he has no money." The agent reached into his pocket and pulled out a five-franc note.
Get rid of it!
The crowd cheered the agent...
I won't tell you his number. Perhaps he would have trouble with his superiors: but I found this solution admirable; he had regained his popularity and, when he set off again, proudly, with a measured step, around his island, he had acquired a sympathy which, I swear to you, was worth a hundred sous! - D.
