THE EXPULSION OF THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH
Will relations between Greece and Turkey be broken off?
The expulsion of the Ecumenical Patriarch from Constantinople by the Turkish authorities, an expulsion which we announced yesterday, has caused deep emotion throughout Greece. Athens is in mourning. The bells of all the churches have rung the bells and cries of "Down with Turkey!" have been repeatedly raised in the Chamber of Deputies.
The newspapers are violent. They do not hide their anxiety about the consequences of this serious event. Speaking in the Chamber, Mr. Pangalos, former Minister of War, declared that only armed force can bring Turkey to reason. The National Assembly has addressed a protest to foreign Parliaments. The Hellenic Government intends, on the other hand, to send a vigorous protest to the Turkish Government. He also proposes to bring this incident before all governments and then submit the matter either to the International Court at The Hague or to the League of Nations. But there is no talk, at least for the moment, of a break in diplomatic relations between Athens and Angora. Let us add that the Patriarch has arrived in Greek territory and that the Turkish authorities are proposing to expel four other Greek bishops.
