INSURRECTION BRINGS BACK TO CHILE THE GOVERNMENT THAT AN INSURRECTION HAD DRIVED OUT
Former President Alessandri is recalled and a Constituent Assembly convened
Telegrams from Santiago de Chile and Buenos Aires, arriving yesterday afternoon in Paris, brought the news that a pronunciamiento organized by military elements had overthrown, Friday, at noon, the Chilean government. This government, moreover, owed its existence to an insurrection: it will be recalled that last September, a group of officers, dissatisfied with the poor financial management of the country, had forced the cabinet then in power to withdraw. President Alessandri was then virtually forced to resign and had to abandon Chile,
The movement which triumphed Friday is a revenge of the parties which had brought Mr. Alessandri to the presidency.
Here is the continuation of the dispatches reporting the event:
London, 24 Jan. dep. B. Parisien.) A Reuter message from Santiago-du-Chile, announces that a contingent of young officers seized today, by force, the Moneda Palace where the various government departments are located. After having deposed the holders of the various portfolios, the authors of this force sent a manifesto to the country, to recommend order and to announce that they had asked the former president, Mr. Alessandri, currently in Italy, to return to the capital and to convene a Constituent Assembly. On the other hand, an Exchange Telegraph message from New York specifies that the occupation of the Moneda Palace took place at 5:30 a.m. and that the movement was supported by infantry and cavalry. The insurgents did not encounter any resistance. A huge crowd, which had gathered around the palace, took up the cause of the initiators of the movement and cheered the former president. Interviewed this evening by a representative of the Reuters agency, the Chilean minister in London said he had been officially informed that the Chilean cabinet had resigned and that a government junta had been formed under the presidency of Generals Pedro Pablo Dartuell and Juan Emilio Ortiz and included the highest army chiefs. The minister added that order reigned in Santiago.
CAUSES OF THE MOVEMENT London, January 24 (Havas dep.) The Evening News publishes a dispatch from Valparaiso saying that the military movement in Santiago is attributed to the bad political and administrative situation, the imbalance in the budget, and the delay in paying the army and navy salaries. Newspapers publish dispatches from New York stating that the military movement in Santiago "flanked by machine guns" took place in perfect order, in the midst of an immense crowd shouting "Long live Alessandri!"
THE CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY IS CONVENED Santiago de Chile, January 24 (Havas Dept.) The military junta addresses a manifesto to the country in which it announces that former President Alessandri has been recalled to resume power and convoke the Constituent Assembly.
MR. ALESSANDRI TO EMBARK FOR CHILE Venice, January 24 (Havas Dept.) The newspapers announce the arrival of Mr. Alessandri, former President of the Republic of Chile, coming from Milan.
