Five sculptures by Pablo Gargallo. In photo

01
MASK OF A SINGER This interesting and decorative mask is made of red copper. Its slightly macabre humor recalls the Baba of the "Russian Tales", the Ballet of Diaghilew

02
HEAD OF A WOMAN The head above is made of lead, one of Gargallo's favorite materials. It is necessary to emphasize the solidity of the masses and the lines

03
HEAD OF A YOUNG MAN This head, made of pewter and whose hair is made of copper, shows the perpetual progress and the artistic refinements of Gargallo. Mask of a very classical serenity

04
MASK OF CHRIST
The mask on the left representing the features of Christ is made of yellow copper. The painful expression of the Crucified recalls the realism of the Spanish Primitives

05
MASK OF CHRIST
The mask on the right is also a mask of Christ in iron. Like many Spanish works, it is painful to watch for French eyes.

GARGALLO'S WORKS IN LEAD, TIN AND COPPER

He is a Spanish artist who works with rare materials, as well as bronze and stone
The Spanish sculptor Pau Gargallo was born in 1881. From an early age he showed such artistic talent that he was entrusted to the care of a well-known sculptor in the peninsula. In 1904, Gargallo left Spain to work in Paris. It was there that he made his famous studies of the seven cardinal virtues and the seven deadly sins, which he later exhibited in Barcelona.
For several years, he worked on ornamental pastries, commissioned by architects for public buildings. and on medal engraving. It was a period of doubt and confusion. But with great energy he managed to free himself from this subjection: his recent work shows the triumph of his personality, composed both of the beautiful imagination of his youth, and of a recently acquired harmony and measure. Although a friend of the painter Picasso, and having worked on Cubist theories, he never aligned himself under any flag. In 1921 he was appointed to the chair of sculpture at the Spanish Academy.
