American painter A. Herter to paint historical fresco in the concourse of the Gare de l'Est
This fresco will commemorate the departure of French troops on August 1, 1914 The well-known painter, Mr. Albert Herter, a student of Cormon and member of the Society of American Decorators, has just donated to the Gare de l'Est an immense and marvelous fresco, commemorating one of the greatest historical events in our modern history: the "Departure of French troops for the front, August 1, 1914", a long and delicate work, which he will paint himself, during this year, in the vast concourse of the Gare de l'Est. A passionate friend of France, Mr. Herter had a son fatally wounded in Château-Thierry, during the Great War. During a lunch hosted by Mr. Hugues Le Roux, senator, brother-in-law of Mr. Herter, a lunch attended by MM. Paul Painlevé, President of the Chamber; Renoult, Minister of Justice; Peytral, Minister of Public Works, M. Ribaud, director of the Eastern Railways, accepted, on behalf of the company, the generous offer of the great American painter and thanked him warmly for this new proof of affection given by him to our country.
