IN A SPEECH, IN CORDOBA, THE KING OF SPAIN RESPONDS TO THE ATTACKS LAUNCHED AGAINST HIM
Madrid, January 17 (dep. Petit Paris.) The king, on the occasion of the inauguration of a water reservoir intended for irrigation, in the vicinity of Cordoba, gave, Thursday, an important speech in which he alluded to the defamatory campaign of which he is the object. Here are the essential passages: They can lead campaigns against me, I do not care. The filth will not soil me. I have a clear conscience and I am strong to have fulfilled my duty for which, if necessary, I would willingly die at my post. My officers have been slandered, while Morocco is covered with cemeteries where rest those who shed their blood and gave their lives gloriously for their country. One has no right to speak thus of those whose chests were riddled with bullets. He who acts thus, outside of Spain, without having made a sacrifice for her, hurling insults and slander, is the enemy of his flag and betrays his country. I hope that God will enlighten him and forgive him and that this pen, so badly used on this occasion, will devote itself in the future to singing the epic of the motherland. -
