STRENGTHENING A PHOTOTYPE BY REDEVELOPMENT.

Phototypes of snapshots are often too dense in the brightly lit areas and too weak in the shadows. If we strengthen such phototypes, we will only increase the hardness and the oppositions.

Here is a process to try:

The phototype, after a stay in water until the gelatin is well swollen, is plunged into the following bath:
Water.……………………………... 150 cc
Potassium dichromate….......... 6.5 grams
Potassium bromide.……........... 1.5 grams
Pure nitric acid....………............ 25 drops.

After bleaching, the phototype is carefully washed and placed in a basin containing a 5% solution of potassium bisulphite; it will be left there for ten minutes and then washed thoroughly. After this operation, the phototype is suitable for redevelopment, because its white surface contains only silver bromide.
This new development will be carried out in full light with any developer that does not contain too much retarding solution. The only concern will be to bring out the details in the shadows.

PROCESS FOR WRITING TITLES ON CLICHÉS.

Here is the simplest method for any amateur wishing to put a title, a date or any other indication on a cliché.

You have to cut out a narrow strip of transparent tracing paper and simply write on it with a fine pen and thick Indian ink mixed with carmine.
Then, using a scraper, remove a strip of gelatin equal to the strip of paper from the bottom of the cliché, put a little glue or gum arabic on the exposed glass and apply, writing against the glass, the small strip that you have just written.
The writing appears in white on a black background.
