Maeterlinck société intelligente

LITERATURE
Maeterlinck's opinions.

Maeterlinck, whose retirement had been announced, did not completely withdraw from Lettres since he wrote in Le Soir — where he explained his political opinions. Obviously, he says, there is an ideal humanity, but it is only on paper, and since the great cataclysm, we no longer live on paper at all. We do not want to repeat the experience that took place on our battlefields, or the other that continues in Russia.
All men will be brothers when they are more intelligent and it is certain that a universe where there were only Poincaré and Anatole France would be Paradise on earth; with joy, we would burn all the weapons there and put everything in common. We are not there yet. Let us give utopia a few dozen chandeliers, perhaps then, when it returns to the globe, it will find mortals who will be able to shelter it without danger.
Political opinions, that? Let us rather say philosophical opinions. Anatole France, who we readily put on the other side of the barricade, would not disavow them, as it is true that wisdom has no extremities or... extremists. It's a perfect circle.
