A STRANGE DISCOVERY Seznec concealed two 1,000fr banknotes and a suspicious manuscript Morlaix, July 17. (From our special correspondent.) — Seznec slept well during his first night in Creach-Joly prison. He was talkative this morning, while yesterday he was taciturn, during the trip from Paris to Morlaix, during which he cried several times. The gendarmes tried in vain to interest him in the unfolding landscape. Seznec alone occupies a three-bed room on the ground floor of the prison. He is therefore not in a cell and he is not incommunicado. However, he has not yet received any visitors today; his wife, whom we questioned this afternoon, has asked for permission to see him: this permission will probably be granted to him, Seznec was imprisoned as soon as he arrived yesterday evening, without undergoing the identity questioning which took place in Paris. We have read the following information on the prison register: Seznec Joseph-Marie, known as Guillaume, son of Yves and Marianne Colin, born in Plomodiern, May 1, 1878, domiciled in Morlaix; profession: merchant can read and write; Catholic religion. Follows the copy of arrest warrant for assassination and forgery The revealing excavation The head guard of the prison is Mr. Chipot the second guard is Mr. Romain. It was Mr. Romain who searched Seznec on his arrival at the prison, he found on him a sum of 476 francs with which he could, in particular, improve his diet. It is therefore wrong to say that he had only 5 fr. 10. In addition, two thousand-franc notes were found concealed in the bottom of his sleeve lining which had been unstitched at the top. Seznec, surprised, said to the Roman guard: "Tell the head guard that you found them in my pocket!" Obviously, the Roman goalkeeper did not consent to this and told the truth. This sum has been seized. Seznec, owner of two thousand-franc notes! Curious fact! On June 27, in fact, in Morlaix, Seznec was summoned to go to Paris by the commissioner of the General Security. But Seznec balked. One of our collaborators was surprised "at this lack of eagerness to help the work of justice. Seznec himself explained why? "I can't go to Paris: I only have 30 francs to make the trip... On the evening of the 27th, a police car came to pick him up! Where did Seznec get this money? There were also fragments of white paper in the sleeve of Seznec's jacket, one of which bore the following sentence: “To find out what to do, go out into the hallway and tear open the two envelopes. » The handwriting does not appear to be that of Seznec. On both tickets, we noticed a suspicious brown stain. During the day, a few onlookers parked in front of the main gate of the prison. The prison of Creach-Joly occupies the premises of the old college of the city, founded in 1597, finished in 1614 by Le Bihan de Pennelé. This college was under the authority of the Jesuits since 1614 and was closed in 1791, the principal of the college having resigned because the city subsidy was insufficient. From the college, the current prison was made and the town of Morlaix remained seventy years without having a college. The Seznec Time Use Survey Mr. Cunat, commissioner and Mr. Chelun, inspector of the mobile brigade in Rennes, have been back in Morlaix since this morning. They went this afternoon to Châteaulin to obtain from the public prosecutor's office of this city, by sub-delegation, a letter rogatory in order to go tomorrow to Huelgoat, where Seznec would have been to see his daughter in a car with his family on June 3 day of his return from Paris. However, Mr. Campion today heard from Mr. Rams, tobacconist, 4, rue de Brest, according to whom Seznec would have been in Tregastel and Plouganou on June 5 to see a cutting of wood Thus, Mr. Campion, examining magistrate, now seeks to establish Seznec's schedule during the first days after his last return from Paris Remember that it was at Mr. Rams, whose tobacconist's recipe bears the number 195, that the sheet of stamped paper on which the bill of sale was typed was purchased. We remember that this sheet bears the stamp with the number 195. At Mrs. Seznec's Seznec's two lawyers were notified by registered letter. We are expecting Me Feillard tomorrow: he has asked for 24 hours to study the file. Before being questioned by Mr. Campion, Seznec will know exactly all the charges against him. It is unlikely that Me de Moro-Giafferi will come to Morlaix at the moment This afternoon, we went to Mme Seznec where we found Me Serrurier Madame Seznec, as “we said above, is in a hurry to go and see her husband, but she fears the sarcasm of the crowd: so she proposes to go by car to the prison. She always showed confidence in her husband's innocence, then she praised M. Quemeneur for us. This one came to Seznec as at home and he often stayed there in the evening. She reminds us that Monsieur Quemeneur had advised him to get rid of his dollars, which he had to accept in payment for the Plourivo property, in return for which he would agree to a price reduction. Madame Seznec was embarrassed to have kept so much gold: four thousand dollars in 90-franc pieces, and she was happy to get rid of it. In Plourivo, the Seznecs are said to have cleared the land, created nurseries; mined the woods and the business would have been successful within five or six years. However, the Plourivo estate did not please Mrs. Seznec because of its isolation and its wild character. |
