At the London Surgical Congress The prodigious effects of insulin LONDON, July 20. — At the International Congress of Surgery, now meeting in London, the delegates this afternoon occupied themselves with the question of serums, vaccines and preventive inoculations "which open up the widest field of promises”. Dr. Le Clerque (France), speaking of insulin, said that Dr. Banting's discovery is one of the epoch-making ones, and that the resulting benefits for humanity make it comparable to the discoveries of the great Pastor himself. He presented the results obtained in the treatment of 161 cases of diabetes. All cases with no complications responded to insulin treatment. In these cases, only one death was due to gross non-compliance with the diet by the patient. On the other hand, out of nine patients who fell into a coma, five died and four were rescued. All or nearly all of these cases were obviously hopeless with ordinary treatment. The sick owe their salvation to insulin, (Morning,) |
