Death of Mr. Algide Carrara Our private correspondent from Cherbourg writes to us: The composer Algide Carrara has just died in Cherbourg. He was 60 years old. For 40 years he presided over musical education in this city where he brought the strict traditions of the Milan Conservatory. He directed the Sainte-Cécile choir and the Philharmonic, which had resounding successes. He had just been appointed director of the Municipal School of Music. He composed a host of symphonic and religious works. We also owe him the Luthier de Crémone, an opera that Vincent d'Indy loved, Ghita, an opera buffa based on a tale by Boccaccio, La Voix des Chimères, a Breton lyric drama, The Virgin and Child, an oratorio that is rehearsed the César-Franck choir directed by Miss Marthe Ménage. He also composed a March of the Entente Cordiale which earned him a reward from the King of England. He was a skilled artist who possessed his art admirably, an undisputed leader and a musician of the highest integrity. In Cherbourg, maestro Carrara will be missed by all. - A.M. |
