The reconstructed mine One of the main attractions of the Great Wembley Exhibition is a mine, an exact copy of real coal mining operations. Nothing is missing: we can see on the surface the high metal frames erected at the entrance to the well. Regulatory skips take visitors down to the galleries supported by woodwork, a labyrinth where carts pulled by authentic little mining horses, “pit ponies”, circulate in all directions, on the tangled skein of narrow rails. We required, among others, in order to give the best possible idea of the work accomplished by these brave little animals, a model “pit pony”, Wallace, who for many years has continued his humble labor deep in the mines of North Shield. He was very amazed at the honor done to him. When we led the existence of a mole for twelve years, we lost hope and even the desire to see the sun again. Resigned to living and dying at the bottom of his black hole, Wallace did not see himself brought out into the open without alarm and he resisted with all his strength when it came to entering the wagon that was to transport him at Wembley. A floating university A floating university has just been created by a group of Americans. The promoters chartered a large transatlantic liner, the Princess Alice, and fitted it out to transport four hundred students, plus faculty, ship's staff and crew. The theoretical courses that will be given along the way will be joined by courses in geography, history, art, botany, etc. practical, the latter courses being given at each stopover that the transatlantic will make, transformed into a floating university. The courses will each last a year, encompassing a world tour. The first cruise includes stops in Japan, China, India, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Algeria, Tunisia, Spain, Germany, Holland, Scandinavia, France and England. |
