The Soviet Code and Marriage RIGA, March 21. In 1923, the Soviet Government promulgated the Civil Code and the Family Code. The new Family Code is the triumph of feminism; it will fill our suffragettes with hope. Women's rights are equal to those of men. Spouses are united in body and soul (a bold statement), but not in property. The authority of each spouse is equal over minor children. Paternal authority is replaced by the rights of "father" and "mother." To marry, a signed declaration from each of the two candidates is sufficient. Divorce by mutual consent is granted upon simple declaration before the civil registrar qualified to draw it up. An illegitimate child has rights over his or her family equal to those of a legitimate child.
