ZINOVIEV AND HIS FRIENDS He gave them the art objects of the French Embassy London, January 24. The Riga correspondent of the Daily Mail writes: "A message from Petrograd confirms that the Cheka has ordered a thorough investigation among the friends of Zinoviev, president of the Third International. The purpose of this investigation is to find Marie-Antoinette's furniture, valuable tapestries, paintings, silverware, etc., which have disappeared from the hotel of the French Embassy. This disappearance was recently discovered when the ambassador took possession of his post. The art treasures of the French Embassy were renowned throughout Russia for their beauty. They had been confiscated a few years ago on the orders of Zinoviev. It is said that he, in order not to break the seals of the doors, smuggled all these objects out through the windows and then distributed them to his many friends. This investigation by the Cheka is a new blow to Zinoviev's reputation, which has already suffered greatly in recent times. In official circles, there is increasing talk of forcing him to resign, because of his private life, which is considered scandalous.
